Heart Health Screenings—Capable of measuring plaque buildup in coronary vessels, a CT Cardiac Calcium Score can help identify a person at high risk for a heart attack. Based on this score, physicians can recommend lifestyle changes and/or medical interventions in order to prevent a major cardiac event. If you have a family history of cardiac disease, don’t wait until it’s too late. Be proactive about your heart health, and schedule a CT Cardiac Calcium Score at HCH today!
CT Cardiac Calcium Scores
CT Calcium Scores are a screening tool that is non-invasive and provides information about the presence, location, and amount of calcified plaque in the arteries surrounding the heart. When fat and other substances build up in the arteries around the heart and calcify, it is called atherosclerosis. This build-up causes a narrowing or blockage that deprives the heart of oxygenated blood and can result in the person having a heart attack. CT Calcium Scores are low radiation and require approximately 15 minutes to complete.
Major risk factors of coronary artery disease (CAD) are:
- High cholesterol
- Family history of heart disease or heart attacks
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Cigarette smoking
- Overweight/obesity
- Sedentary lifestyle
